Amusing Episode, and Other Ramblings

My darling boyfriend has a Netflix account. I decided I wanted to see the commentaries on the Firefly episodes, so I had him order the DVDs. Keep in mind, I've been trying to get the guy to watch Firefly for months - he was stalled around "The Train Job." I had to go visit my parents over the weekend, and he was bumming around the house, when my first two disks came. Bored, he sat down to watch, and went all the way through. And instead of waiting for the other disks to get here so he could watch those, he chose to go out and buy the set.

So now we have a Firefly DVD set. Niftyness.

In other news, taking advantage of the Midwest's abundance of Half-Price Books stores, I purchased six sci-fi & fantasy novels for less than $17. Like manna, I tell you. I'm now in the middle of Tam Lin, and am starting to aquire Pamela Dean's voice in my head and on paper. The situation is not as bad as speaking in Baroness Orzcy's over-romanticized and repetitive language, a situation that described the weekend, as I went through something approaching half of the Scarlet Pimpernel series. The books do have substance, but it's buried so far underneath everything else, and her descriptions of Marguerite make me want to smack her with my feminist clue-by-four. Ah, well. It's all in the name of research.

I think after I've exhausted myself with sci-fi/fantasy, I'll move onto Jacobeans and Revenge Tragedies, if only so that I can fully understand what [livejournal.com profile] lareinenoire is talking about half of the time.

Novel progress is sadly nonexistent. Maybe after the coming weekend, when I shall ostensibly be a year older and maybe even somewhat wiser. Unlikely, but worth a shot. Same can be said for my planned essays - the Atlantis one is stuck right before "Poisoning the Well" due to time commitments, and the Batman one is stuck in research phase, as I'm trying to finish up the Pimpernel series, collect a set of graphic novels that could be considered Batman "canon" (and man, I really need to figure out this whole Crisis on Infinite Earths thing, it's become clear enough that I can't ignore it outright). Comte de Monte-Cristo is waiting for its reread, as that's less likely to be headache and more pleasure.

I'm also very, very amused that according to the DC Universe timeline, Bruce Wayne is currently 35 years old (as is Clark Kent). Dick and Babs have gotta be in thier twenties, she's had time to be a librarian, get shot, and get a law degree from Harvard. For that matter, where does Jason Todd fit in this very accelerated space?

I think I might have to break down and get a paid account for this journal. Too many fandoms for just three icons.

Another Browncoat gets his spurs. How happy this makes me.

Also, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who acquires linguistic styles from reading books. Have a happy birthday!

Thank you!

Yeah, he greeted me on IM the other day with "You can't take the sky from me." It's terribly cute.

And a big "Oh yeah" on the liguistic styles thing. The worst was the semester of Hemmingway followed by W. Somerset Maugham. I went from brevity being the soul of wit to a comedy of manners.

Watching Firefly has definitely made me start talking in a drawl at times, it's really weird.

To sum up Crisis in Infinite Earths, DC decided to tidy up it's timelines, universes and continuities by getting rid of everything and condensing all the good bits they wanted to keep into one single universe. How does it relate to Batman? Barely a whit. Well, he no longer has a Bathound. Or a Batwoman I suppose.

Pretty much any trade of Batman worth getting is "canon" anyhow. I think Jason Todd was Robin for like maybe two or three years tops? Dick Grayson, manslut of the DC Universe, was Robin for six or seven I think.

The "War Stories" commentary is beyond hilarious. Seriously. It will crack your shit up.

As for Bats canon, as [livejournal.com profile] mrsix noted, any of the recent trades are canon; we just came out of War Games, which shook things up. The original Crisis was many years ago, but apparently there's another one coming up soon.

Jason Todd was Robin for a very short period until the fans killed him. No, really, this is how it was explained to me. An issue ended with Jason caught in an exploding building, and DC allowed the fans to choose whether he lived or died. They chose death.

Except he's, um, back. Check the current issues.

Don't forget Tim Drake, the current Robin. Dick is Nightwing now.

So what's this for, anyway? Really, if you have any questions about Batman, you should join Buffistas and check out the Jossverse thread. The Buffistas are Batfiends like no other.

I know the general timeline for Batman and the evolution of the "Family," it just freaks me out how compressed it is. Sadly, I started reading at "Cataclysm" and "No Man's Land," so while I know what happened, the major players since Bruce's parents' deaths, and all that jazz, I've never really had a firm fix on how it all evolved. How fast it went, that Bruce was so young at present time.

I did read "Death in the Family" whilst waiting for my friends to decide which manga and RP books they wanted to purchase several years ago. It kind of makes me laugh to see that the fans wanted him dead.

[livejournal.com profile] mrsix actually just pointed me toward that most recent Red Mask issue. I'm currently in his neck of the woods.

As for the why - I've decided to write a paper presenting Batman as the "logical" evolution of the previously mentioned works - Pimpernel and Monte-Cristo. At Barnes & Noble today, it occurred to me that including Zorro couldn't hurt anyone save my time and bank account.
