So, having devoured much in the way of both YA and "adult" fantasy (Tamora Pierce, Delia Sherman, and Jacqueline Carey) and Rats Saw G-d, survived the final for my class, and entered into a work lull, I'm starting to re-emerge into the world.
The upside of this little retreat is that I've actually started writing my novels. The downside to that venture, is that I've forgotten how to write. For some reason, the concepts of "dialogue" and "action/description" in the same scene have wholly abandoned me. I wind up sketching out a scene in dialogue, and coming back to fill it in the description. All of which results in achingly slow progress.
On the upside, I had a double-whammy of a plot bunny for the second and third books hit me before I left work yesterday, so I holed up in a Starbucks and, which Chantico as reinforcement, wrote out the two scenes. There's dialogue and description! I'm so proud of them, it's funny.
All in all, I'm debating getting one of those word-counter-meter thingies. However, as I currently hold the total word count around 100,000, and have written under 2,000 words for the first novel, the prospect is somewhat intimidating.
My ventures in addicting people to Veronica Mars and SG:A continue, and
lareinenoire is almost finished, so I think I'll have to seek out a new victim person to live through vicariously. I've actually been taking a TV break which will probably lead to increased enjoyment of the series when I decide to re-watch them. People are descending upon my place en masse this weekend, so I suspect at least some showings of stuff are bound to ensue.
I've also come to the conclusion that I'm dreadfully under-read. George R.R. Martin? George R.R. Martin who? I didn't hear of Earthsea or Ursula LeGuin until SciFi decided to air that apparently-horrid adaptation, and I still haven't picked up the books. For someone who is an avowed SciFi/Fantasy reader, I'm very culturally illiterate. Methinks I should change that.
