I lack discipline. Every time I make plans, they get sidelined and I wind up reading Jane Austen instead. Not that reading Austen is bad, by any means, but I do have a book I need to rewrite in large chunks. And so, a meme stolen shamelessly borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] truepenny.

A List of First Sentences of Works in Various Stages of Progress:

I. The Novels

1. Glamour - "The night was thoroughly unpleasant; cold and wet the way only a New England night could be." (Sadly, I may scap this one in the rewrite of the Prologue - I'm fond of the description it leads to, but not sure it doesn't resemble "It was a dark and stormy night" too much. :)

2. Honour - "It had been, for centuries uncounted, the tradition of the Winter King of the Unseelie Court to spend one afternoon a week in the Tower of his Lady Seer, having tea."

3. Nightfall - currently doesn't have one, and really, this is the one I'm fighting against the urge to start off with "It was a dark and stormy night."

II. Short Stories in Need of Editing

1. "Invincible Summer" - "I was born in Kiev, but all our family vacations were spent on the Black Sea."

2. "Inspiration" - "My muse had left me, my inspiration was dead." (I love this one, 'cause I wrote it on the last dregs of care. It was the final short story for my last class as an undergrad.)

3. "On the Perils of Maidenhood" - "Let me tell you something right from the start: I have always hated unicorns."

4. Still Bloody Untitled - "Adelyn pushed open the door to the Java Bean with a combination of her arm and shoulder, shedding her designer sunglasses with the other hand."

5. "The Wall" - "I was in West Germany, more properly known as the Federal Republic, on business when the East German Democratic Republic collapsed, and was about to fly back to London when the news broke."

III. Short Stories in Need of Finishing (1st Draft)

1. "Interest" - "The first thing Tom noticed about his rescuer was the odd greenish-gold glitter of her eyes."

2. "Due Process" - "Dierdre stumbled in as she entered his room, weaving slightly as she almost tripped on the rug, and fell lazily on the bed." (Hey, I just found this one!)

3. "To See Eternity" - "They got caught in a summer thunderstorm one July day."

IV. First Lines in Hunt of a Story

1. "Wherever Miriam went a spring of water, fresh and pure, sprang out of the dry desert sands."

Well, "Inspiration," "Invincible Summer," and "On the Perils of Maidenhood can be found on my Gather page (http://lionsdaughter.gather.com), though you can't leave comments unless you have an account (I think I sent you an invite a while back).

The untitled story is here (http://adelynne.livejournal.com/21458.html), and what I have of "To See Eternity" is here (http://adelynne.livejournal.com/31938.html).
