When I was younger, via crystal-growing and other chemistry-related kits/sets. Later on, somebody gave me a molecular model set (not for a class, just for fun), which was actually pretty cool, although I never did manage to construct a bucky ball out of it. And then there was a fellow Chem E who was attempting to woo me and gave me an Erlenmeyer flask he'd nicked from lab, filled with Hershey's kisses and sealed off with Parafilm, and a vial of mercury. Well, I guess you can't go wrong with chocolate and shiny metal... (But then, I've written love notes on bits of silicon wafer, so who am I to talk...)
I guess one could try to give "biology", too -- there's always Giant Microbes, but it's not really biologies unless it wiggles... :)
