Well, James *has* to be D'Artagnan, I suppose, as the most central of the bunch. Remus does fit Athos best in terms of personality, I suppose. I kind of feel like Sirius = Aramis more than Porthos, though I'm trying to justify it and I can't. Which would leave Peter as Porthos, the least colourful of the bunch, I always felt, which would suit Peter.
Does all this make Snape = Rochefort and Bella = Milady?
The thing about Porthos is his deathly loyalty (which is how he dies), and his brashness. Which is why I thought of Sirius. He's not a thinker. Aramis and Athos are the schemers.
That's true about Porthos and Sirius's brashness and loyalty -- but I do recall that Sirius is supposed to be clever (isn't that what McGonnagal says?) even if he may act without thinking. It's true that Peter needs to be a schemer too, though. So, OK, Sirius = Porthos it is.
My first thought was that Richelieu was Voldemort, but that's not very interesting and also not fair to Richelieu. Lucius, perhaps? He's got the public persona / power in the Ministry and all that...
