So, having none of this "waiting" business, I dragged my boyfriend out to see Batman Begins on openning night.
My boyfriend, oddly enough, is not as big a Batman fan as I am. So it amused me to no end when, in the last scene Rachel comes up to Bruce and gives him a little kiss, he turns to me and goes "You know, they only stuck that in so that guys could turn to their girlfriends and go 'look honey, there's romance!'"
That does, for the record, sum up all the romance I felt coming out of this flick. Mind, Nolan isn't Lucas, and his leads have chemistry - it's just that their chemistry is more of the might-have-been variety. As far as I'm concerned, Katie Holmes wasn't even bad - she wasn't as good as the rest of the cast, but the rest of the cast just totally, as they say, r0x0r3d.
I was totally amused by vintage American heroes - Batman and Gordon - being played by British actors - Bale and Oldman. Which brings me to another total gush - the casting was spot-on. I saw the promo pics for most of the cast early on, but pictures can't convey the sheer acting cojones. What was absolutely brilliant about this movie was that - despite the mega-watt star power of the supporting cast - every performance simply served to highlight Bruce Wayne/Batman, not to detract attention from him.
I like the believabily of the whole thing. I like that Batman's voice is altered from Bruce Wayne's - despite the annoying grating sound. I like that they showed the journey before the Batsuit. Someone once said that with Superman, the majority of the story is over once he puts on the suit. With Batman, I find that's only the rising action, but the beginning is just as important - where he got the martial arts, the theatrics, the gizmos. How he managed to convince Fox and Gordon to trust him in the first place, why Gotham is so damn important to him.
I love that when he sneaks into Gordon's office, Bruce's got a stapler to the back of his head. It's that lovely homage to "Batman doesn't use guns" that just makes it all the sweeter. It is, trully, the best Batman picture I've ever seen, and the truest to the comic book vision.
In short, I (a) hope they'll get to make the other two films, and (b) really want to write that Batman vs. Le Comte de Monte-Cristo comparison now. A lot.

Re: unrelatedly...
I'm going to stop by my friends playing cards at STATA and see the BF off to visit his parental units, but I should be pretty free. And if I can't be found before the movie, I'll definitely be free after, with car and everything.

They've got Bale, Caine, and Freeman signed on for the second movie; and Katie's been dropped.
I'm very interested in your Batman vs. Monte Cristo piece, btw. Will stop by periodically to check if you'd posted it. *g*
